Angelo da Fonseca's New Swadeshi Lexicon for Christian Art
The Goan artist Angelo da Fonseca’s (1902-1967) choice to be an artist, as against a medical career, was based on the premise that if Christianity was to thrive in post-colonial India it had to strengthen its Asiatic roots and re-invent itself.  He was influenced by the work of Abanindranath Tagore and brought the Bengal school mission to provincial Poona where he lived and worked. The talk will focus on the various artistic traditions and philosophies that influenced Da Fonseca's art.

Savia Viegas holds a PhD in Satavahana sculptural art from the University of Mumbai and is also a journalist, novelist and painter. She has created a three-year degree course in Heritage Management introduced in colleges and was awarded the Senior Fulbright Fellowship to do a residency at the George Washington University and the Smithsonion, to map visitor studies in the various museums under that banner.  Her project entitled “The Family Archive” was funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. At various times she has worked as lecturer, journalist and editor in The Illustrated Weekly and Humanscape magazines.  Currently she is writing a book on the work of Goan painter Angelo da Fonseca with a grant from the India Foundation for the Arts.  She lives in the village of Carmona in Goa and runs a Foundation called Saxtti Foundation which tries to put people in the centre of development, with a pre-primary school called Saxttikids, a film society called Saxttifilms and an art resource called Saxttiart which showcases village craft.
